What is O.C.I.A.?
The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, is the Catholic Church's process for welcoming adults into the faith and preparing them to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist (Holy Communion). It's a gradual journey of faith formation, spiritual growth, and community building.
Unbaptized persons who will attend an eight-month process to help them grow in awareness of God's call to conversion, as well as ways to respond to this call. These are Catechumens.
Baptized in another Christian church are those catechized (participated in religious education) and un-catechized (no religious education) persons from a faith tradition other than Catholic who are seeking full communion with the Roman Catholic Church (Reception of Penance, Eucharist, and Confirmation). These are Candidates.
Baptized but un-catechized (no religious education) Catholic adults are persons who were baptized as infants in the Catholic Church; however, were not given any religious upbringing within the Catholic tradition. These adults will be prepared to celebrate the Sacraments of Penance, Eucharist, and Confirmation. These are also called Candidates.
